They will both get what they want and walk away unscathed. Yes, Richard and Katy work together and the contract is the means to an end for both. You may read the synopsis of the story and think, 'I've read this trope before.' Or this can be your favorite type of storyline. And you just gotta wonder how this contract will all play out with him at the helm. I mean there would be a moment in the start of the story you'd think he'd be charming then he'd go open his mouth.

However, they have charming qualities that I can overcome douche like behavior. I have disliked the Hero of the story before. Figure it out and get it done.'Įver work a job where someone you interact with everyday- boss, coworker, vendor - you hope chokes on their sandwich or has a fatal accident with a letter opener? Be prepared: Richard VanRyan is that person. It doesn't detract from the story, but it certainly DIStracts. The last word of each chapter is cut off. As mentioned by another reviewer here, the audio itself needs some adjusting. I think I'll put this on my repeat list and now I'm going to go check out other books by the same author. This was good enough and I was into the story enough that I looked forward to moments when I could pop in my earbuds and continue listening. I had difficulty not picturing that person in place of Katharine, but that's more my own personal hangup. Tatiana Sokolov reads okay, but her voice has the tiniest lisp, not to mention a tonal quality + inflection that remind me of somebody I know. I will say that I was happy that most of the book was from the man's perspective. I hadn't listened to any books narrated by John Lane before but he wasn't bad-not my favorite male reader, but decent and listenable.

I really enjoyed Richard's personal growth, too. And it's resolved reasonably well into a nice, sweet happily ever after, without some kind of deus ex machina. The major conflict to the couple's relationship is realistic and not drawn out for the sake of drama.

It's a bit of a mashup of the relationship-of-convenience and enemies-to-lovers tropes (two of my favorite kinds) and delivers a slow burn with good pacing.
